5 free things to do in Reykjavik

There is no doubt that most traveling is expensive. That is why it is always a good idea to include free activities in your travel plan. That way you can save a few bucks while still experiencing a lot of great things. Iceland is no different as it offers several free things to do except its beautiful scenery.

Reykjavik Botanical Gardens

The capital of Iceland has its own botanical garden containing more than 5,000 types of plants, flowers, and birds. This place truly gives insight into the vast diversity of vegetation in the northern area of the world. During the summer it’s possible to join 30 minute guided tours (in English) for free. Please visit their website for more information.

Harpa Music Hall & Conference Center

This fairly new venue is a center for cultural and social activities in Iceland. Many concerts, shows, and performances are hosted here. Though shows are not free to attend, it’s possible to visit the venue for free.

Walk around the city

Some of the best experiences and vacation photos come from just walking around without a specific plan. We can highly recommend this for Reykjavik also.

Free hot springs

Yes, you read it right. Reykjavik offers free hot springs. It’s not all about the blue lagoon. On the website Hot Pot Iceland, you can see a map of the possibilities and find one near you. Some of them require transport of course, but it’s definitely worth it and often less crowded.

Local entertainment in cafés and bars

Due to the cold weather, many Icelandic locals prefer to stay inside for the majority of the year. In some cafés and bars, it’s possible to enjoy local entertainment such as intimate concerts and stand up. Sometimes there is no entry fee, but this solely depends on the venue and the entertainment.
